More About Unplug Your Children

Today’s technologically aware children still love to play – unplugged. Join the Belly Button Buddy™ and her friends as they discover that fun – inspired by simple ideas – can be good exercise both mentally and physically.  

On the first volume of Unplug Your Children the Belly Button Buddy and her young friends enjoy traditional role play after creating great props from readily available household materials. Full of giggles, gasps, and music it is meant to be enjoyed by children from one to seven but it is hoped that the whole family will enjoy this DVD and be inspired to have old fashioned fun together with simple traditional play.

The activities shown on the first volume of Unplug Your Children are based on traditional role play. Pretending to be someone in the community provides countless ideas for playtime and teaches social skills.

Traditional Role Play

Traditional role play is based on what children observe. Growing up on a farm might lead to using blocks to build barns and fences. Growing up in a retail family often leads to playing store. Playing with dolls is pretending to be a caregiver. Imitating a waiter after going out for dinner is a wonderful way to relive the experience.
Traditional role play develops skills involving observation, listening, acting, organizing, and sequencing. Role play is also just good fun! The only thing caregivers need to provide is a space and some interesting stuff.

Once Upon a Time

The Belly Button Buddies™, a multi-faceted concept in children's entertainment, began in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1999. It is the delightful result of collaboration between visual artist Denyse Klette and writer-performer Nicole Haddock.
